Time for a Change for the Good
Joel Thibodeaux, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, is a 30 year resident of DeKalb County. He was educated in Catholic schools from kindergarten through high school. He attended Louisiana State University for two years, but in the midst of a severe economic downturn in Louisiana in the mid-1980s, he moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia at the age of 19 in search of better opportunities. There, he met his wife Stacey, née Davis, a native of Columbus, Georgia, and moved to south DeKalb shortly after they married in 1988. They have two adult children, Johanna (28) and Jordan (22), as well as a grandson. Joel and Stacey have lived in the Stonecrest area since 2002.
Joel worked various jobs to support his young family before returning to school in 1992. Joel now holds an AA degree from DeKalb Technical Institute (now Georgia Piedmont Technical College), a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from DeVry University in Decatur, and a Master’s in Public Policy from Georgia State University – where he was the Legislative Budget Fellow at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
Joel spent 14 years in corporate accounting and finance before changing focus to public finance in 2010. He worked multiple legislative sessions as a Program Analyst in the Senate Budget and Evaluation Office – primarily covering Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Transportation, along with Economic Development and tax reform with the Senate Finance Committee. He is currently the Director of Audits & Compliance at the DeKalb County School District.
Joel is actively engaged in his church and community. He and Stacey attend Christ Our Hope Catholic Church in Lithonia, where he serves on the parish’s Finance Council and Stewardship Ministry, and is treasurer of the Men’s Ministry. Joel is the former two-term president of the Savoy Chase/Saddleridge HOA. From December 2016 through May 2017, Joel served as Chairman of the Governor’s Commission on the City of Stonecrest, effectively guiding the fledgling city’s governance from county to municipal management. Joel and Stacey recently co-founded the Stonecrest Schools Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit group committed to community support of public schools in the city of Stonecrest, GA.
With a strong commitment to community, a belief in local solutions to local issues, and an advocate for government that is efficient, ethical, and inclusive, Joel Thibodeaux now seeks to serve the people of Rockdale, Newton, and DeKalb counties by offering principled leadership, energetic and effective representation, an empathetic ear, and a servant’s heart to the mission of improving the lives of the citizens of Georgia’s 43rd Senate District.
